Little girl is the ‘real hero’

Although truck driver Richard Filiczkowski of Zion IL jumped into an icy South Dakota pond April 26, 2007, and saved Abby’s life, he and wife Janet say the little girl is the "real hero. She really is. She was so strong. I couldn’t believe that this little girl could be so strong. She was just amazing."

Did you know?

In today's 'Did You Know?' department, from Bulk Transporter:

"A one-penny increase in the price of diesel annualized over an entire year costs the trucking industry an additional $391 million a year."

So, I guess that old Ben Franklin saying needs to be changed to, "A penny saved is $391 million earned."

Volvo to pay hefty fine

AB Volvo has agreed to pay a $7 million penalty as part of an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding charges brought in connection with an ongoing investigation related to the U.N. Oil for Food program, Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Criminal Division announced.

Don't eat Honduran canteloupes

The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about cantaloupe being imported from the Honduran company Agropecuaria Montelibano because its fruit appears to be connected to a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada.

Could diesel prices equal strike?

Today's Trucks At Work blog talks about a possible trucking strike on April 1:

"The high price of diesel is also sparking talk of a nationwide trucker strike on April 1, this time being organized online by Dan Little, an owner/operator of a livestock hauling company in Carrollton, MO. According to an interview Little gave to The Quad-City Times, he estimates at least 1,000 other truckers from across the U.S. have committed so far to joining him in a strike on April 1."

Ford announces EcoBoost, new engine platform

Ford Motor Co. is preparing to roll out a new gasoline engine platform for its cars and light trucks over the next five years, starting with several of its 2009 model vehicles – a gasoline engine called the “EcoBoost” that uses turbocharging and direct-injection technologies.

Truck repos double in 2007

From Fleet Owner:

Nassau Asset Management’s NasTrac Quarterly Index (NQI) reports a 110% increase in repossessions of tractor-trailers in 2007 compared to the previous year. Repos increased from about $5,700,000 worth to slightly under $12,000,000, the company said.

Soaring diesel fuel prices

Today's Trucks At Work post discusses how trucking companies are dealing with soaring diesel fuel prices: "Everyone is looking for ways to cut fuel costs these days, and no wonder: with oil now steadily priced over $100 per barrel, diesel costing $4 a gallon, and gasoline predicted to cross the $4 threshold later this spring, fuel is much on the minds of heavy, medium, and light-duty truck users alike."

"The number one positive by-product of this recession is that loan rates are falling dramatically. Now is the time to look into refinancing all of your assets. Whether you have short-term or long-term debt, now is the time to secure a much lower rate. Look at all your assets, from car financing to building mortgages, and consider refinancing them."

ATA projects record-high fuel expenses for 2008

The American Trucking Association is projecting a record-high diesel fuel bill in 2008. ATA said the trucking industry will spend $135 billion on fuel in 2008, based on current fuel price forecasts.

New trailer demand in Eastern Europe tops 100k

From Trailer/Body Builders:

East European demand for heavy truck-trailers smashed through the 100,000 units barrier in 2007. In six countries, the market increased by more than 33%.

Chief beneficiaries of this boom were the German firms of Schmitz, Krone and Kögel, plus Austria's Schwarzmüller, Europe's four largest trailer manufacturers.
